Norwegian Bokmål
Etymology
Derived from nb -vær -ing inhabitant-forming suffix noun-forming suffix. The first element, nb -vær inhabitant-forming suffix, is from nb non -veri inhabitant-forming element. NAOB regards the Old Norse element as probably related to nb var, nb vare and nb verge to defend, protect.
Compare nn -væring inhabitant-forming suffix.

Usage notes
nb -væring is particularly common in Northern Norwegian speech; Språkrådet describes it as the usual final element in Northern Norwegian inhabitant names of this type.
The form of the place name before the suffix is not always completely predictable. For example, nb Rana gives nb ranværing, while nb Lofoten gives nb lofotværing.
