Greek
Etymology
First entered Greek through borrowings with the el it -are verb ending but now often applied to non-Italian stems.
Pronunciation
el /ˈaɾo/
Suffix
Added to a noun to form an active verb with that element:
el γράδο hydrometre γραδάρω to measure liquid density
el κόρνα horn κορνάρω to blow the horn, to honk
el φρένο brake φρενάρω to brake
el σουτ shoot σουτάρω to shoot (the ball)
el φλερτ flirting φλερτάρω to flirt
Usage notes
While this is often added to stems that are nouns in Greek in their own right as above, sometimes verbs are brought directly into Greek from foreign sources with no associated nouns entering the language - for example
el φλιπάρω to flip, to flip out, for which there is no standalone Greek noun el *φλιπ-.
el παρκάρω to park (a car), for which there is no standalone Greek noun el *παρκ-.
el πάρκο park is unrelated to meaning of parking a car, and refers to an open recreational area eg in a city or town.
