Norwegian Bokmål
Etymology
nb non -ðr weak past-participle ending, ultimately from nb gem-pro *-daz weak past-participle suffix. In Bokmål, the inherited dental ending appears as the single-consonant allomorph nb -d in a group of weak verbs, especially after stems ending in a diphthong, ⟨g⟩ or ⟨v⟩.
Compare nn -d and sv -d weak-verb past-participle ending.
Pronunciation
nb /d/
nb -d
Suffix
nb suffix
An inflectional suffix forming the supine of certain weak verbs, used with an auxiliary to form the perfect tenses.
nb leve -d to live supine suffix → nb levd lived
nb prøve -d to try, test supine suffix → nb prøvd tried, tested
nb bygge -d to build supine suffix → nb bygd built
nb eie -d to own supine suffix → nb eid owned
nb kreve -d to demand, require supine suffix → nb krevd demanded, required
nb Hun har levd et langt liv. She has lived a long life.
Forming the corresponding basic indefinite form of the past participle.
nb Huset ble bygd i fjor. The house was built last year.
nb Dette er en prøvd og pålitelig metode. This is a tested and reliable method.
Usage notes
Verbs taking nb -d normally have a simple past in nb -de:
nb leve to live — nb levde lived — nb levd lived
nb prøve to try, test — nb prøvde tried, tested — nb prøvd tried, tested
nb bygge to build — nb bygde built — nb bygd built
nb eie to own — nb eide owned — nb eid owned
nb kreve to demand, require — nb krevde demanded, required — nb krevd demanded, required
The supine follows a form of nb ha to have:
hun har prøvd — “she has tried”
de hadde bygd — “they had built”
The past participle is used in passive constructions or adjectivally:
huset ble bygd — “the house was built”
en prøvd metode — “a tested method”
The basic past participle normally has the same form in the masculine, feminine and neuter indefinite singular:
en bygd vei — “a built road”
ei bygd bru — “a built bridge”
et bygd hus — “a built house”
The definite singular and plural participle forms normally add nb -e, producing the ending nb -de:
nb bygd built → nb bygde built; definite singular and plural
nb prøvd tried, tested → nb prøvde tried, tested; definite singular and plural
nb eid owned → nb eide owned; definite singular and plural
With infinitives ending in unstressed ⟨e⟩, that vowel is removed before the suffix:
nb leve to live → nb levd lived
nb prøve to try, test → nb prøvd tried, tested
nb kreve to demand, require → nb krevd demanded, required
A doubled stem-final consonant is written as a single consonant before nb -d:
nb bygge to build → nb bygd built
nb tygge to chew → nb tygd chewed
After a stem ending in a diphthong, the suffix is added after the final unstressed ⟨e⟩ is removed:
nb eie to own → nb eid owned
nb bøye to bend, inflect → nb bøyd bent, inflected
nb pløye to plough → nb pløyd ploughed
The distribution of nb -d is partly lexical and cannot be predicted from the spelling of the infinitive alone.
Some verbs permit a form in nb -d alongside a form in nb -et:
nb bygge to build → nb bygd or nb bygget built
nb lage to make → nb lagd or nb laget made
Not every word ending in ⟨d⟩ contains this suffix; the form must belong to a verbal paradigm.
Derived terms
nb bygd built
nb bøyd bent; inflected
nb drøyd delayed; prolonged
nb eid owned
nb føyd joined; complied
nb greid managed
nb krevd demanded, required
nb lagd made
nb leid rented; led
nb levd lived
nb pleid nursed; accustomed
nb pløyd ploughed

nb strevd struggled
