Etymology
Named after Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, better known as Lord Palmerston.

Usage notes
"North" was added to the name in 1871 by the NZ Post Office to distinguish it from en Palmerston in the South Island. The suffix remains even though it is now much larger than the North Otago town, but it is known locally as Palmerston or en Palmy.
