Etymology
de body :inh gmh:körper<t:body><ety:bor<la:corpus>>
From de gmh korper, gmh körper, gmh körpel, from de la corpor-, inflected stem of la corpus.
The word displaced first the predecessor of de Leiche, de Leichnam (now “corpse”) and later on de Leib (now dated, literary, religious). Doublet of de Korpus, de Korps. The umlaut remained rare until the 16th century. Its derivation from the -i- in la corporis, la corpori seems unlikely in such a late borrowing. Probably the dissimilated variant gmh körpel received the umlaut by analogy with diminutives in gmh -el. Some Central German dialects show secondary umlaut before -r- + labial (see hrx Kerrper, hrx Kerrver and lb Kierper), but precisely these dialects make little or no use of this word. See en corpse for more.
