lebkuchen
German
de:
Etymology
From 13th-century de gmh lebekuoche. The second element is clearly de Kuchen; the origin of the first element is uncertain: it might come from the same root as de Laib loaf, or from de la libum flat bread (for the unexpected vowel, compare gmh lebezelte, which existed alongside the form with the expected vowel, gmh libenzelte), though both theories present difficulties.
