The first element is la portus harbour, port, from nb itc-pro *portus, ultimately from nb ine-pro *pértus crossing, passage. The origin of Cale is uncertain, though a Celtic origin has been proposed.

Usage notes
As opposed to most country names in Portuguese, pt Portugal is normally used without the definite article, e.g.: de Portugal 'from Portugal', em Portugal 'in Portugal', a Portugal 'to Portugal'. However, it does take a definite article when it has a modifier, as in o Portugal do século XIX '19th-century Portugal'. This peculiarity applies to many other country and place names such as pt Angola, pt Moçambique, pt Cabo Verde, pt São Tomé e Príncipe, pt Essuatíni, pt Macau, pt Timor-Leste, pt Andorra, pt Israel, pt Aragão, pt Castela or pt Leão, as well as to most city names.
