en Frank Jacobs Welcome to Stanistan w:Foreign Policy https://foreignpolicy.com/2014/07/01/welcome-to-stanistan/ 2014-07-01 At a signing ceremony in the Kazakh capital, Astana, on May 29, the presidents of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan ratified the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) into existence. An EEU modeled on the European Union was first mooted back in 1994 by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, but took off only after his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, seized upon its potential as a Moscow-centered, Asia-oriented alternative to the EU. Belarus was always going to be the most willing partner in Russia’s attempts at self-aggrandizement. https://web.archive.org/web/20251021010603/https://foreignpolicy.com/2014/07/01/welcome-to-stanistan/ 21 October 2025

Etymology
nb :bor be:Белару́сь 1
nb ine-pro *h₁reh₁- row
nb be Белару́сь Bjelarúsʹ, from historical be Бе́лая Русь Bjélaja Rusʹ White Rus, from nb orv Бѣла Русь Běla Rusĭ White Rus. The first element is ultimately from nb sla-pro *bělъ white, from nb ine-pro *bʰel- shiny white, shining. The second is orv Русь Rusĭ Rus, borrowed from nb urj-fin-pro *roocci Swedes, itself borrowed from nb non-oen *rōþs-, possibly from nb gem-pro *rōþruz, ultimately from nb ine-pro *h₁reh₁- row to row.
The name therefore literally means “White Rus”, not “White Russia”: orv Русь Rusĭ Rus refers to the medieval Rus' polity and people, not modern nb Russland Russia. The lexical formation is clear, although the historical reason for applying “white” to the region is uncertain.
Compare the traditional calques nb Hviterussland and nb Kviterussland.

Usage notes
The official long-form name is Republikken Belarus (“the Republic of Belarus”).
Norwegian authorities adopted nb Belarus in place of nb Hviterussland on 29 May 2022. The change was intended to follow the Belarusian endonym more closely and to emphasize the distinction between Belarus and Russia and between Belarusian and Russian.
