muggenbeet
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as mugghenbete around 1313. Compound of the plural form of nl mug mosquito, Culex pipiens and an unclear second element. The second element has been interpreted as a Frisianised variant of nl beek brook, stream or dum bete stream used for tanning leather, but neither of these interpretations match the oldest attestations.
