Etymology
nb nl Jan Mayen, an eponym commemorating the Dutch seafarer and whaling captain Jan Jacobszoon May van Schellinkhout. In July 1614, May captained the ship De goude Cath on an expedition to the island undertaken by the Dutch Noordsche Compagnie, while Jacob de Gouwenaer captained the accompanying Den Orangienboom. The cartographer Joris Carolus, who took part in the expedition, produced a chart on which the island itself was called nl Mr. Joris Eylandt, while one of its promontories was named nl Ian Meys Hoeck, literally “Jan May's cape”. The latter name was subsequently transferred from the promontory to the island as a whole. Historical forms include nl Jan Mayens-eilant in 1616 and nl Jan Mayen Eylant on a 1623 chart by Willem Blaeu, after which nl Jan Mayen became established as the name of the island.
The second element nl May was the seafarer's family name; historical records of the family also show the spelling nl Mey. The form nl Mayen in the place name is therefore not itself his surname: the early records show possessive forms such as nl Meys and nl Mayens before nl Mayen became fixed in the island name. The deeper etymology of the family name nl May is uncertain.
