Etymology
First attested as hasle in 814-815. Etymology nl 1. Possible etymologies include a compound derived from gem-pro *hasi- brushwood and nl lo light forest or a derivation from nl hazel common hazel, Corylus avellana. A third etymology proposes that the initial H- in the earliest attestations is an insertion and that the toponym may actually derive from nl as European ash, Fraxinus excelsior. Compare nl Asselt, nl Nederasselt and nl Overasselt.
