Etymology
The name of the fabric (often found with de, "from") comes from the name of the city where it was produced (with a reinterpretation of -ford as forte "strong"), it is not clear which city this was but probably in England, since it also appears as English Stamford ("estanforte yngnes"), regular commerce between the British Isles and northern Spain is attested in other documents. But it also recorded as from Stamford of Arraz ("destanfor de Arraz"), probably in reference to en Arras (in modern Pas-de-Calais, France). It has thus been also theorized that this Stamford could be en Steenvoorde instead, a city in Flanders near Arras.Lletres asturianes, 111, p. 11-33 (2014)
