Etymology
A medieval name revived in 1936, prior to which the municipality had been called fi Uusikirkko. Multiple theories exist: (a) possibly from a pseudo-Swedish (sv Kaland) or pseudo-Latin (la Kalandia, la Calandia) of a derivative of fi kala, perhaps fi kalainen with plenty of fish; (b) possibly from a Low German place name gml Kalant (found in 13th century documents from Mecklenburg); (c) according to Heikkilä (2012), from an original fi *Kalendek (back-formation back-formed root fi *Kale- from fi Kaleva with fi -nne nominal) and reborrowed through Swedish, where sv *Kalend > sv Kaland by association with sv land.Heikkilä, Mikko.
