Etymology
First attested as marisfliete in 944. Derived from nl klein small, lesser and a compound of nl ofs mar lake, pool, watercourse and ofs fliet tidal watercourse, river. The second element was gradually reinterpreted to nds-nl slacht levee. The element nl klein was added to distinguish the settlement from nl Groot Maarslag.
