Italian
Pronoun
it pronoun form
it enclitic form ci; appended to present active infinitive verb forms to derive reflexive, accusative and dative forms when the object is first plural person
it dare to give → it darsi darci to give ourselves; to give us; to give for us
it vendere to sell → it vendersi venderci to sell ourselves; to sell us; to sell to us
it servire to serve → it servirsi servirci to serve ourselves; to serve us; to serve to us
Usage notes
The final -e of the original infinitive is removed :
it -are → it -arci
it -ere → it -erci
it -ire → it -irci
Where the verb ends in -rre, the final re is removed, leaving behind just an -r:
it introdurre to introduce → it introdurre introdurci to introduce ourselves; to introduce us; to insert in us
In any case, after the suffixation, there is only a single r and no vowels immediately before -ci.
Becomes -ce when followed by a third person direct object clitic (it lo, it la, it li, it le, or it ne):
it aver to have + -ci + -ne → it avercene to have ourselves [something] of [something]
In older Italian, by assimilation, the m preceding the ⟨c⟩ of the enclitic may become dental (m → n) in the apocopic first person plural: andiam(o)ci → andianci. Compare it sommi contraction.
