Etymology
The first genuine instance of the toponym seems to have been the cs zlw-ocs Policz in a 1253 document by Ottokar II of Bohemia granting the location the status of la locus forēnsis market-place. zlw-ocs Policz probably derives from zlw-ocs a village on a plain, in open terrain, from zlw-ocs pole field, plain. The cs nad Metují element is a more recent addition, meaning “on [the River] Metuje”, although that river flows outside the town’s municipal territory.Historie města History of the town https://www.policenm.cz/zivot-ve-meste/historie-mesta/ Oficiální stránka města Police nad Metují Official website of the town of Police nad Metují 9 November 2023 https://web.archive.org/web/20260512175818/https://www.policenm.cz/zivot-ve-meste/historie-mesta/ 12 May 2026
