Dutch
Etymology
First attested as asperen in 893. Etymology nl 1. One proposed etymology interprets the name as a derivation from a hydronym in turn derived from nl odt aspa aspen, Populus tremula with the suffix odt -arô-. Hydronyms are rarely derived from tree names, however. It is more likely that the toponym is derived from an older hydronym gem-pro *Aspurô, which might in turn be derived from gem-pro *aspa- bend, hook. Compare nl Afferden, nl Asper and de Asperden.
