Etymology
From de gmh ratte, from de goh ratta, goh rato, from de gmw-pro *ratt, from de gem-pro *rattaz rat; see that entry and en rat for more. Compare also nl rat, sv råtta, fr rat.
The consonantism ratta in Old High German (instead of *razza) is unexplained. One possible explanation is that the form was borrowed from de osx ratta. The dialectal German variant de Ratz could be reflective of an inherited Proto-Germanic form, an adaptation of the Old Saxon form, or (perhaps most likely) a later expressive derivative.
