Finnish
Etymology
From earlier fi *-au < fi *-ao < urj-fin-pro *-ado, from fi urj-fin-pro *-o (whence also Finnish fi -o) plus the inflectional stem of verbs ending in urj-fin-pro *-at'ak (stem urj-fin-pro *-ada-). Originally a characteristically Eastern Finnish suffix. Cognates include krl -avo.
Suffix
noun yy
Forms nouns from verbs.
fi evätä to deny epuu refusal
fi hakata to beat, chop, cut hakkuu chopping, logging
fi kerätä to collect keruu collecting
Usage notes
This suffix is used for some verbs whose citation form ends in fi -ata/fi -ätä.
The front-harmonic variant fi -yy would, in theory, be used when the first vowel of the word is one of the harmonic front vowels fi -y-, fi -ä-, fi -ö- (stems containing only neutral front vowels fi -e-, fi -i- take the back-harmonic variant). Standard Finnish has no words using fi -yy, however, but they can be found in dialects.
The verbal stem is in the strong grade if applicable.
