farse
German
Etymology
From Late de gmh verse, ultimately from de gmw-pro *farsijā, derived (with Verner's law Verner alternation) from de gem-pro *farzaz bull, ox, whence obsolete de Farre. Cognate with nl vaars.
The word is not attested in High German before the 15th century and apparently alien to modern dialects outside the borderlands with Low German. Therefore likely borrowed through de gml - and/or de dum verse (13th c.). Older words for “heifer” were (Upper German) de Kalbe and (Central German) de Sterke.
