Etymology
For the Ålesund and Tingvoll names, from an older island name Aspa, a weak feminine formation based on nb non ǫsp aspen, from nb gem-pro *aspō aspen. Oluf Rygh explicitly identifies the names in Ålesund and Tingvoll as the same old island-name type.
The historical etymologies of the names in Flatanger, Steigen, Brønnøy and Steinkjer have not been established. They may be parallel formations of the same type, but this cannot be assumed from the modern spelling alone.
