First attested as optie aeker, dair nu die zypkerc op staet in 1415. Compound of nl nieuw new, nl dum loes drainage channel and nl -drecht ferry, watercourse. The toponym contrasts with nl Oud-Loosdrecht. Formerly called de Zijpe.
