oslo osło Ósló Osló
English
Etymology
From en no Oslo, from en non Ósló, non Ásló f n. The first element is disputed, but is likely from non ǫ́ss, non áss god; one of the Æsir, from en gem-pro *ansuz. Another theory is that it comes from non áss hill, beam, from en gem-pro *ansaz, but this is unlikely. The second element is non ló meadow f n, from en gem-pro *lauhō f, gem-pro *lauhaz m (compare the suffix -enm ley in English place-names).

Etymology
nn ine-pro *h₂ems- *lewk-
From nn non Ósló, non Ásló f n. The first element is disputed, but is likely from non ǫ́ss, non áss god; one of the Æsir, from nn gem-pro *ansuz. The name non Ósló then comes from older non *Ǫ́sló where the ǫ́ is nasalised (whence the -n- in nl Ansloo and la Ansloa), from nn gmq-pro *ᚨᚾᛊᚢᛚᚨᚢᚺᚢ, from nn gem-pro *ansuz god, deity + gem-pro *lauhō f, gem-pro *lauhaz m clearing, meadow. According to Sandnes and Stemshaug, the name has likely been around since before the first century.
Another theory is that the first part comes from non áss hill, beam, from nn gem-pro *ansaz, but this is unlikely, as there would be no explanation for non ó- found in non Ósló. The geologist Tom Segalstad Tom V. Segalstad has claimed that it comes from nn non ufs steep mountainside, based on the Danicised spelling da Opsloe.Tom V. Segalstad Tom V. Segalstad 17th February 2018 Oslo het lenge Opsloe. Men hva betyr det? Cognates include fo,is Ósló, nl Ansloo and (also nds -) nl Anslo and la Ansloa, la Asloa, la Osloa Latinisations.
Between 1624 and 1925, nn Oslo referred to the Old Town, Oslo#Mediaeval Oslo old town of Oslo, a mediaeval town that burnt down in 1624. When the city was rebuilt, king Christian IV of Denmark named the new city nn Christiania (later spelling: nn Kristiania) after himself. During the 1800s, various authors would begin taking the old name back and the city officially changed its name to nn Oslo in 1925. The location of the old town got the name nn Gamlebyen Old Town, now a neighbourhood in the modern city.

Og detta er vel ogso den rettaste Synsmaaten. His [Peter Andreas Munch P. A. Munch’s] only complaint was that the name was later thrown away, as king Christian IV in the year 1624 “had the unfortunate idea of switching out the old honourable name Oslo with the new, self-invented and half-barbaric name Christiania”. And this is probably also the most correct way to look at it.
