bügel bugel
German
Etymology
de goh gmw-pro 2
From de gmh *bügel (attested as gmh bügele f, later gmh bogell m 15th c.), from de gem-pro *bugilaz, from the root of gem-pro *beuganą to bend, bow.beugelBügel Cognate with nl beugel, gml bȫgel (earlier already osx armbugil), non bygill (whence da bøjle etc.).
It seems that the word was originally northern (Low and Central German) and established itself more widely only during the 16th century. The Schweizerisches Idiotikon still considers it “not truly autochthonous” (de nicht recht volksmäßig).
