-öittää
Finnish
Etymology
From the plural stem fi -oi- + fi -ttaa.
Pronunciation
*
fi -oi- is always (secondarily) stressed, unless it is in the second syllable in the verb. (Compare fi -oida.)
Suffix
verb öittää oitta
Variant of fi -ttaa used for many stems that end in -a or are trisyllabic.
Usage notes
Verbs ending in fi -oitta- are generally simplified to fi -otta- colloquially, which can lead to incorrect hypercorrections of verbs that never had an -i- to begin with.
The difference between fi -oitta- and fi -otta- in Standard Finnish is somewhat artificial and based on the following rules:
Verbs derived from stems (e.g. nouns, oblique stems of nouns, or stems of verbs) ending in fi -a or fi -ä are generally spelled fi -oitta-, while those derived from stems ending in fi -o or fi -ö are generally spelled fi -otta-.
If the verb is derived from a polysyllabic nominal (e.g. one with three syllables), fi -oitta- is generally used even if it ends in fi -o or fi -ö.
If the word a verb is derived from is ambiguous, or no such word is identifiable, fi -otta- is generally used.
Verbs with a more literary nuance are more likely spelled fi -oitta-.
Verbs with a more colloquial or sound-symbolic nuance are more likely spelled fi -otta-.
However, the rules are at times confusing even to native speakers, leading to incorrect spellings. In some cases, correct spellings have to be learned by verb.
