Etymology
nb gʷṓws
Named after the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier (1705–1786), with nb øy island in the feminine definite singular nb øya the island, literally “the Bouvet island”.
The French surname fr Bouvet is traditionally derived from Old French fro bouvet young ox, a diminutive of fro buef ox with fro -et diminutive suffix. fro buef is from Latin la bōs bovem ox, from Proto-Italic itc-pro *gʷōs, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European ine-pro *gʷṓws cow, ox. Thus the surname probably originated as a nickname associated with a young ox; this older surname meaning is unrelated to the geographical character of the island itself.
