Etymology
de grc
Relatinized form of older de Salm 1 (now an informal doublet meaning “lengthy talk”), from de gmh salme salm(e), from de goh salmo, from de la psalmus, which see for more.
The spelling goh ps- is occasionally attested also in Old and Middle High German, though this need not reflect an according pronunciation. The form was spread chiefly through Martin Luther Luther’s Bible. Dialectally, the pronunciation /ps/ has widely established itself in Upper German, where that onset is common through reduction of the prefix de be-. The more northern dialects generally retained the form de Salm until fairly recently.
