Etymology
From de gmh bischof, from de goh biscof, from de gmw-pro *biskop, from de la episcopus. The goh -f- is due to the High German consonant shift, but in gmh - it irregularly developed into gmh -v- (thus predominantly gmh bischoves rather than gmh bischoffes), which explains the (variably) lengthened vowel. This development has been ascribed to renewed Romance influence; compare it vescovo.
Pronunciation
de /ˈbɪʃɔf/ /ˈbɪʃoːf/ predominantly short, but forms with umlaut usually long
