Usage notes
la Aetna/grc Αἴτνη was anciently both a feminine toponym and a female nymph.
It is both a volcano and a mountain, which locally are called scn u scn vurcanu/it il it vulcano (m.), scn u scn munti/it il it monte (m.), scn a scn muntagna/it la it montagna (f.).
Nowadays local people perceived “It” as a feminine noun, prima facie, because it is named scn a scn Muntagna (and then Italianized as it la scn Montagna), secondly also because of the widespread use to refer at It by calling Her “scn mamma Etna”. Sometimes also the ending in “-a” could mislead some speaker about its grammatical gender.
