Etymology
From sv göt en Geat borg fortified castle or city.
Possibly influenced by an earlier nearby settlement, sv Nya Lödöse (1473–1624), which was referred to as sv Gøthæholm in its charter. Earlier thought to be named after the local river sv Göta älv. However, since both cities were founded as a government initiative, Göteborg may instead be named after the historical regional tribe the Götar Geats, from which the names sv Göta älv and sv Götaland are also derived. 1605 as sv Giötheborgh.SvOrtLex – G, Gadden–Götlunda (2016), by Swedish Institute for Language and Folklore and Uppsala University Department of Scandinavian Languages
