lock Lock Löck
English
Etymology
en
From en enm -lok, enm -lak, enm -lac, from en ang -lāc suffix denoting activity or action, from en gem-pro *-laikaz, suffixed form of en gem-pro *laiką play, sport, fight, activity, gem-pro *laikaz game, dance, hymn, sport (ang lāc), from en ine-pro *leyg- to bounce, shake, tremble.
Cognate to non -leikr.
The etymology of the suffix is the same as that of the noun ang lāc "play, sport", also "sacrifice, offering", corresponding to obsolete Modern English en lake (dialectal en laik) "sport, fun, glee, game", cognate to Gothic laiks "dance", Old Norse leikr "game, sport" and Old High German leih "play, song, melody" (> Old French fro lai "song, lyric, poem, en lay sung poem"), obsolete or dialectal de Leich. Old English ang līcian ("to please", Modern English like) is from the same root. In modern English, the noun has been reintroduced through the cognate Swedish sv lek as a specialist term referring to mating behaviour.
