gaule gaulé Gäule
French
Etymology
fr gem gem-pro cel
fr frm Gaule, from fr fro Gaule, fro Waulle Gaul, from fr frk *Walhaland Gaul land of the Romans or foreigners.
Cognate with goh Walh, goh Walah Celt, Roman, Gaul, ang wealh, ang walh a non-germanic foreigner, Celt, non Valir Gauls, Frenchmen. More at en Wales, en Cornwall, en Walloon.
Despite their similar appearance, Latin la Gallia is not the origin of French fr Gaule. During the evolution from Latin to French, stressed initial /ˈɡa-/ yielded /dʒa/ > /ʒa/ (cf. Latin la gamba > French fr jambe), while unstressed final /-lia/ yielded /ʎə/ > /j/ (cf. Latin la filia > French fr fille). Thus, the regular outcome of la Gallia is /ʒaj/ ⟨Jaille⟩, which is attested in several French toponyms: La Jaille-Yvon, Saint-Mars-la-Jaille, etc.
