janum
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Jawnum in 1506. Borrowed from nl fy Jannum, which may derive from a compound of nl ofs Iwe a personal name and ofs hēm home, settlement. The first element is unlikely to be fy Jan, as Christian names were introduced to Frisian in a time when the ofs hēm element was no longer productive in toponyms. Compare nl Driesum and nl Hanssum.
