Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Iteram in 1143. Compound of nl op upper, upstream and the hydronym nl Itter. The hydronym in turn derives from either nl ine-pro *id- swell, engorge or ine-pro *ajadh- bright, clear.ine-pro Can anyone determine what the correct PIE forms would be? These do not look right. The prefix nl op was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from nl Neeritter. Compare nl Itteren and nl Ittervoort.
