dampf Dåmpf
German
Etymology
From de gmh dampf, gmh tampf, from de goh thamph, goh damph, goh tamph, from de gem-pro *dampaz. Given the predominant d- in Old High German and quite frequent attestations with th- in related words, the underlying form in High German is probably gem-pro *þampaz; also attested in the osx - verb osx thempian. The origin of this byform seems unclear. Eventually derived from de gem-pro *dimpaną to steam; vaporise.
