fi kangas soil kankaan of boreal/heath forest pää end gen. Attested as a byname/nickname (whence a surname) since the Middle Ages. The name of the town refers to its location at the tip of fi Hämeenkangas and fi Pohjankangas (both eskers or systems of eskers containing fi kangas soil in their names).
