Etymology
Possibly from nn non *Stráð n in the dative form non *Stráði, from which we could expect the modern form, cf. nn Skailand from non Skaðaland. Related to the verb non strá. Another possibility is non *Strá f without the non -ð, with a dative form non *Strái, however this would require a shift from feminine to neuter, similar to non Rá f (in Brandbu) → non i Raii (1355).* Strai øvre og ytre 9 13 https://www.dokpro.uio.no/perl/navnegransking/rygh_ng/rygh_visetekst.prl?s=n&Vise=Vise&KRYSS141157%4031916=on
Based on the older pronunciation /strɛɪː/, Jørn Sandnes and nn Ola Stemshaug have theorised that the name might come from nn non *Stræti n, from non stræti, in which case the non t must have softened to a non ð and thus become a glide sound from which a diphthong could arise (cf. non Skaða- → nn Skai-).nn 1997 Jørn Sandnes; Ola Stemshaug Norsk stadnamnleksikon Norwegian place name encyclopedia 4
