Etymology
Probably from a pre-Germanic la ine - hydronym derived from a root related to la ine-pro *(H)rewH- to root, dig out, tear open, see also lv raupjš harsh, rough.
Bichlmeier instead argues that the name is probably la cel -, reconstructing la cel-pro *ruro-/*rurā-. He derives this alternatively from la ine-pro *h₃reyH- to move quickly, rush forward, or from ine-pro *h₂reu- to shine, sparkle reddish, hence “the gleaming one”. He considers both meanings typical of ancient hydronyms and does not choose between them.Bichlmeier, Harald (2019), “Zur Etymologie der Sippe des Namens der Ruhr”, Namenkundliche Informationen 111, pp. 153–166.
