Azerbaijani az: Елдәниз ایلدکز ائلدنیز Alternative forms az Eldəgəz Eldəgiz Elgiz Etymology az el dəniz, but etymologically from a misreading of az-cls ایلدکز eldigüz, where the second element was mistaken for az-cls دکز az dəniz dəŋiz, as a result of the fact that the letter az-cls ک could represent both /g/ and /ŋ/. The first element was indeed az el, while the second element was possibly also found in the given name az-cls gündigüz. The name was also historically attested in other languages as axm Ելտկուզ, ka-mid, and fa-cls ایلْدِگُز, fa-cls ایلْدُگُز. Compare tr İldeniz. Cf. in I. Arthir, X, 201, another similar name k.nd.k.z (*gün-digüz?). The reading El-deniz (A. Z. Togan) is obviously modernizing and impossible.
