Finnish
Etymology
fi nuuks- io, perhaps through a river name fi *Nuuksjoki (oblique fi *Nuuksjoe- > fi *Nuuksjoo- > fi *Nuuksjo- > fi *Nuuksio-). The name may derive from an old lake name fi *Nuuksijärvi or fi *Nuuksujärvi. This has often been considered to derive from a fi smi word for swan (smi-pro *ńukčë). However, old attestations suggest that the name originally had a diphthong, either ou or uo, and if this is the case, the Sami etymology cannot be upheld.
