English
Etymology
Possibly from en enm elson, alternative spelling of enm elsen, enm elsyn, enm alsene an awl or some other pointed instrument or tool, either from en dum elsene, dum alsene, from en odt *elisna, odt *alasna, from en gmw-pro *alisnu, gmw-pro *alasnu, from en gem-pro *alasnō, or from an unrecorded Old English form.
en There are instances in Middle English where "elsen" is spelled "elson", such as in "trynkettus and tournyng-stonys and elson bladys, Colrakus and copstolus one gret whyle-barrous" on page 86 of the 1845 edition of Herkyn to my tale edited by T. Wright and J. O. Halliwell, but we lack a source linking such usage to the surname.
