Pronunciation
-yn
Suffix
lt suffix
Forms adverbs that denote a change toward a certain condition.
lt mažas mažyn little; small downward in size; becoming smaller
Usage notes
Adverbs formed from this suffix are often used with the verb lt eiti to go, e.g. eina lt blogyn, it is getting worse. Reduplication is also common for emphasis, e.g. lt didyn ir didyn, bigger and bigger.
Kalindra (2011) compares -yn to -ways, -ward, and -wise in English, although -yn is not restricted to directions. Alternatively, one may think of it as a comparative suffix like -er, which is usually how derived adverbs would be translated into English (as in the preceding examples), but this is distinct from the comparative degree of adverbs in Lithuanian.

Etymology
An international chemical-nomenclature suffix, in Norwegian a specialized variant of nb -in chemical suffix, remodelled under the influence of en -yne alkyne-name suffix. The English suffix was contracted from the ending en -ylene in en acetylene, and was incorporated into the systematic series en -ane, en -ene and en -yne for hydrocarbons with single, double and triple carbon–carbon bonds, respectively.
Compare da -yn and sv -yn, as well as en -yne, fr -yne, de -in and fi -yyni alkyne-name suffix.

nb -yn
Suffix
nb suffix n definite singular -ynet indefinite plural -yn definite plural -yna or -ynene
nb organic chemistry A suffix used in the names of alkynes, hydrocarbons containing one or more carbon–carbon triple bonds.
nb etan ethane → nb etyn ethyne, acetylene
nb propan propane → nb propyn propyne
nb butan butane → nb butyn butyne
Usage notes
In the name of an alkyne, the alkane ending nb -an is replaced by nb -yn:
nb etan ethane → nb etyn ethyne
nb propan propane → nb propyn propyne
nb butan butane → nb butyn butyne
When the position of the triple bond must be specified, a number is placed before the suffix:
nb but-1-yn but-1-yne
nb but-2-yn but-2-yne
The suffix contrasts with nb -an, used in alkane names for compounds with carbon–carbon single bonds, and nb -en, used in alkene names for compounds with carbon–carbon double bonds.
Chemical nouns in nb -yn are neuter. The suffix has definite singular nb -ynet, an unchanged indefinite plural nb -yn, and definite plural nb -yna or nb -ynene.
Not every Norwegian word ending in ⟨yn⟩ contains this suffix; it is restricted to chemical nomenclature.
