Etymology
From de gmh, from de la Mauritius, from the Saint Maurice 3rd-century Egyptian Saint.
Though Christian in origin, de Moritz was a name typical of assimilating Jews in the 19th and earlier 20th centuries. These probably used it as a loose Germanisation of such names as de Moses or de Mordechai. The name has gained new popularity in Germany since the late 20th century.
