Dutch
Etymology
First attested as hamescheym in 1243. Likely a compound of an unknown first element and nl heem home, settlement. The first element is unlikely to be nl Hans a personal name, as Christian names were introduced to Dutch in a period when the nl heem element was no longer productive in toponyms. Compare nl Driesum and nl Janum.
