Etymology
Compound of nb Lærdal elv municipality and valley in Vestland river, with linking nb -s- interfix and the traditional local definite singular ending -i, literally “the Lærdal river”.
The first element nb Lærdal is from nb gmq-mno Lærdall, from nb non Læradalr, probably reduced from reconstructed non *Lærardalr. The latter consists of the genitive *Lærar of a lost river name non *Lærr and non dalr valley, dale, literally “valley of the Lærr”. Rygh considered non *Lærr to have been the old name of the river now called nb Lærdalselvi. The origin of the lost river name is uncertain; Magnus Olsen connected it with Old English ang læs pasture, interpreting it approximately as “the river flowing through a grass-rich valley”, while an earlier connection with Old Norse non lær thigh was regarded by Rygh as unlikely. Old Norse non dalr is from nb gem-pro *dalą valley, dale, of uncertain deeper origin.
The second element nb elv river is from nb non elfr river, from nb gem-pro *albī river. A proposed further connection with Proto-Indo-European *albʰih₂ is uncertain.
