Luxembourgish
Pronunciation
lb /ʃue̯l/ [ʃuə̯l]
lb uəl 1
Etymology 1
From lb gmh schale, from lb goh scala, from lb gem-pro *skalō. Cognate with de Schale, nl schaal; also related to en shell.
Noun
f
shell
peel, skin, rind (of fruit, cheese, etc.)
bark (of a tree)
Etymology 2
Ultimately from lb gmh schāle, from lb goh scāla, from lb gem-pro *skēlō. Compare de Schale, nl schaal.
The expected Luxembourgish form of this word would be lb *Schol. While there could have been an early merger with etymology 1, the word is rare or appears in non-native form also in bordering dialects of gmw-cfr -. Therefore it is more likely that it is a borrowing from lb de -, which appears as lb Schuel by analogy (so-called de Einlautung).
Noun
f
bowl, dish
