de Mal mal mahl
de aːl 1
Etymology 1
de gem-pro 1
The same word as de Mal time, from de gmh māl, from de goh māl, from de gmw-pro *māl.
The sense “meal” developed from “mealtime” as also in cognate en meal. Further cognate with nl maal, da mål goal.
The orthographic distinction from de Mal began in Early Modern German, probably in part under influence of etymology 2 below, which was then becoming obsolete. Later grammarians, at any rate, were in doubt about which of the two was the origin of the word for “meal”.
