야
Korean
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
From ko okm - -야〮 -yá; see the main entry for more.
Particle
particle
ko -아 vocative particle hey Post-vowel allomorphic
ko ^현우-야, 너-가 물 엎질렀어? Hyeonwoo, did you spill the water?
ko 나무-야, 넌 이름-이 뭐-니? Hey, tree, what's your name?
ko 찰스야, 힙스터가 뭐야? Charles, what is a "hipster?"
Usage notes
For words formed by the suffix ko -이 or ends with a consonant, the suffix is typically deleted and the vocative takes ko -아.
ko 두꺼비 toad > ko 두껍-아 hey, toad
ko 민욱 Minwook > ko 민욱-아 Hey, Minwook
The word is used as an informal suffix. The formal equivalents to the word are -님 and -씨. For example:
ko 찰스야, 책 재밌니? Charles, is the book interesting?
ko 두보이스 씨, 책이 흥미로우셨나요? Mr. DuBois, are you feeling being interested in the book?
Etymology 2
Suffix
ko casual informal ko -어 intimate-style suffix, used after the copulas ko -이다 to be and ko 아니다 to not be
ko 이게 바로 표범-이-야. This is what they call a leopard.
ko 뭐-야? What is it?
ko 아니-야. 할 말 없어. It's nothing. I have nothing to say.
Usage notes
Only used directly after the stems of ko -이다 to be, either explicit or implicit, and its negative ko 아니다 to not be. If another suffix intervenes, the suffix reverts to ko -어:
ko 뭐-였-어? What was this? (with past-marking ko -었-)
Before ko -요 politeness-marking particle attached to the intimate style, the form is again irregular ko -에요, and ko 이-에요 contracts to ko -예요 following a vowel.
ko 뭐-야 > 뭐-예요? What's this? intimate > What's this? polite
It cannot replace ko -어 in its infinitive/connective sense. The copulas' equivalent to connective ko -어 is ko -라, although ko -어 can still be used.
Etymology 3
emphatic
From ko okm - -ᅀᅡ〮 -zá, from ko oko 沙 *-sa; see the main entry for more.
