German
Etymology
From de nl lakmoes, from de dum lecmoes, a compound of the cognates of de lecken to leak and de Mus mush. The former was later adapted to nl lak, de Lack varnish. It seems obvious that there is a relation between dum lecmoes and synonymous non litmosi (whence en litmus), but the nature of this relation is unsettled.
