la Lancobriga
Etymology
From la cel -, a compound whose second element is la cel-pro *brigā hill, fortress, hill-fort. The first element is disputed.
Curchin analyzes the first element as und *longo- long, interpreting the name as “elongated hill-fort”.Leonard A. Curchin (2007), “Toponyms of Lusitania: A re-assessment of their origins”, Conimbriga 46, pp. 129–160. This would presumably be related to or derived from la ine-pro *dlongʰos long.
Alternatively, Delamarre connects it with cel-pro *longā ship, vessel, continued by sga long ship, vessel and cy llong ship, giving an interpretation such as “fortress of the ships”.Xavier Delamarre (2004), “Gallo-Brittonica: transports, richesse et générosité chez les anciens Celtes”, Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie 54, pp. 121–132. This itself is derived from la la longa long.
